Audio Captures NEAR MISS As Delta, American Jets Come Within 300 Feet Florian Xhekaj [hCXhqQue3Nm]

Air traffic control audio from Bostons Logan International Airport captured a tense moment over the weekend as two passenger jets came within an estimated 300 feet of each other, adding to growing concerns about aviation safety and a string of recent close calls nationwide.

In the recording, a Delta pilot can be heard saying, Delta 3, uh, 2351 going around because of American. A tower controller then asks, American 3161 where you going? The American Airlines pilot responds, You cleared us for take off 3161!

The incident came as lawmakers held a Senate hearing examining near misses around the country. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., warned that even when close calls do not end in tragedy, they still highlight vulnerabilities in the system.

Regardless of that outcome, they still remain a warning call for, and a reminder that our aviation system is fragile, Moran said.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said many incidents have been narrowly avoided because of quick action by aviation professionals.

In far too many of these incidents, the difference between a close call and a deadly disaster has come down to a single, highly trained and professional individual taking emergency action, Duckworth said.

Former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, now president and CEO of Airlines rangers vs hibernian for America, told lawmakers the U.S. aviation system is the safest in the world, but said more investment is needed to modernize air traffic control technology.

Congress should absolutely build upon its 12.5 billion down payment towards air traffic control modernization with the next round of funding to ensure the technology gaps that have been ignored for the past 30 years finally get addressed, Sununu said.

The hearing also came amid a series of deadly aviation incidents around the country in June. A private jet crashed in Texas, killing one person. Eight people died in a military test flight of a B-52 in California. And 12 people were killed in Missouri when a skydiving plane went down.

Also cited as a continuing point of concern was a midair collision over the River last year that killed 67.

The unfortunate truth in aviation is that we make the most progress on safety only after lives have already been lost. Yes, we honor the lives of those lost by strengthening aviation safety, but I can assure you wed all rather have our union brothers flying the line with us, said Capt. Jason Ambrosi, president of the Air Line Pilots Association.

Duckworth also raised concerns about airspace safety near Reagan National Airport, saying the presidents push for a planned 250-foot-tall Triumphal Arch at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was jeopardizing air passenger safety. She urged the FAA to reject pressure to fast-track the project near the airports airspace.
