Atlantas stadium grounds crew is racing to perfect a world-class playing surface ahead of this summers major FIFA tournament, transforming the indoor venue into a carefully controlled environment where grass can thrive under artificial conditions.

Pitch manager Stuart Wilson explained that the sod installation process, which took four days, utilized a carefully chosen blend of Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass optimized for indoor conditions.

"So it's obviously an indoor environment, so it actually thrives best in this environment. There was a lot of testing that was carried out in dan rather Tennessee to find the right grass species for the different environments, and that's what works best in here," Wilson told Reuters on Thursday (May 21)

Maintaining the surface demands constant care.

The indoor stadium presents unique challenges compared to outdoor venues battling summer heat. While Atlantas climate-controlled arena avoids extreme temperatures, the lack of natural sunlight means technology plays a major role in keeping the grass healthy.

"We're trying to grow and maintain grass that's living indoors," Wilson said. "The grow lights are an absolute brilliant substitution for sunlight, but they aren't sunlight. They're producing a much weaker degree of light, but it's enough for us to maintain the pitch."

Wilson expressed confidence that the field will meet the standards of elite international competition as Atlanta gears up to host one of the tournament's semi-finals.

We're gonna have the best players in the world playing here, so I'm very confident this playing surface will be excellent for this tournament, Wilson said.
