The $AAPL Dependency: Why Apple Cant Quit Broadcom — Yet [$AVGO] Kardea Brown [kgUETIjWfb5]

Apple is the poster child of vertical integration its own CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, all designed in-house. So why did it just extend a custom-chip supply agreement with Broadcom out to 2031? This is a descriptive DEPENDENCY audit not a claim that Apple is weak or that Broadcom 'owns' Apple. It's about a lesson hiding in that contradiction.
THE CORE IDEA in-house is not the same as independent:
Draw Apple's silicon as one bar. The big part raj bawa the processor, graphics, neural engine Apple designs itself (a real moat). But a smaller, specialized slice the wireless / connectivity ASICs and the radio front-end stays SUPPLIED. And this week Apple didn't shrink that slice; it locked it in to 2031.
Designing your own silicon is supposed to mean you can drop a supplier whenever you like. A multi-year lock says the opposite: on this slice, you can't.
WHY THE SLICE STAYS CAPTIVE: the radio front-end sits on decades of patents, exotic materials, and manufacturing know-how you can't reverse-engineer in a product cycle and even a perfect design has to be QUALIFIED across every band, carrier, and country. That takes years, because a wireless bug ships in hundreds of millions of devices. So switching is a slow, expensive migration.
WHERE PRICING POWER LIVES: a supplier's margin doesn't come from a commodity part (competed to zero) it comes tommy fleetwood from the one part the customer can't easily replace, on a contract it can't easily leave. A multi-year lock on a hard-to-substitute slice is the textbook definition of pricing power. The length of the lock is the tell.
BUT APPLE IS IN-HOUSING SLOWLY: Apple has been pulling pieces of that block in-house (its own modem effort, more of the wireless stack over time). Every piece it in-houses comes off the supplier's bar so a lock to 2031 might be a CEILING, montreal not a floor. The honest read is a race, and the contract length tells you how slowly Apple itself expects it to go.
WHAT TO WATCH: (1) Apple's in-house wireless progress shipping lineup-wide; (2) the SCOPE of the renewed contract (broader or narrower dollars); (3) the supplier's Apple-related revenue trend flat while Apple's units rise = quiet in-housing.
This is educational analysis of public information NOT investment advice. No live price or price target is claimed. Broadcom's exact revenue share of Apple is not stated as fact (verify it). Verify every figure and date yourself before acting.
