🎞️A widower whose lifestyle offers nothing more exciting than playing poker with old show-biz cronies, or cheering up Max Wellington (Burl Ives), a man who refuses to speak, the elderly and retired vaudevillian Bill Grant (George Burns) finds a young girl hiding in the trunk of his car. The stowaway, a 14-year-old orphan named Kate (Brooke Shields), is on the run from a small-time crook named DeMesta. Intrigued with her bravado and charm, Bill offers shelter, which Kate accepts, all the while planning to sneak away. However, trouble ensues when Bill's over-protective grown daughter, Shirl (Lorraine Gray), her husband Harris (Nicolas Coster), and some nosey neighbors call the police. During one of his regular poker sessions, Bill taps four ex-vaudevillians like himself to employ some fancy magic to keep Kate out of sight. As they develop a mutual admiration, Bill takes Kate's advice and ingeniously shocks silent Max into speaking again, while she thinks twice about spending the money she's taken and turns to him for help. Just when Bill has persuaded her to go to the police, DeMesta shows up, and it takes Bill and Max's magic illusions to subdue him.
