An American Airlines Airbus A321 (A321), registration N104NN, performing flight AAL3085 / AA3085 from Santa Ana John Wayne Airport, CA (USA) to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport, NY (USA) was about to land at JFK Airport when the flight crew went around because they were unstable. Then they were vectored around for the ILS approach RWY 31 right but the flight crew went around again and reported a problem with the box setting. The third approach was unsuccessful as well. After that the pilots requested delay vectors. Finally, when the flight crew contacted the Tower controller on the fourth approach they declared MAYDAY for low fuel.
