Dara was sixteen days into her Appalachian Trail through-hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia on October 14th 2019 when a figure fell into step beside her. He introduced himself as Callum and talked about the trail correctly for forty minutes. Then he repeated an entire sentence word for word with no reaction when she pointed it out. His trekking poles matched her pace with mechanical precision not naturally, immediately. When she stopped he stopped at the exact same moment. Not after. The same moment.
